What Is Pollution,
and Why Does It Matter?
Pollution is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, yet it is also one where each of us can make a real difference. Explore the science, the stories, and the solutions.

What is Pollution?
Pollution happens when harmful substances (chemicals, waste, noise, or heat) enter the environment faster than the environment can absorb or neutralize them. These substances, called pollutants, disrupt the natural balance that sustains life.
Pollution comes in many forms: the smog hanging over a city skyline, the antibiotic-laced water draining from a pharmaceutical factory, the chemical waste buried under a neighborhood. Each type has its own causes, effects, and solutions, but they are all deeply connected.
The good news? We understand more about pollution than ever before, and we know that individual choices, added to systemic change, can make a real difference.

Learn moreThe Hopeful Truth
Pollution is a human-made problem, which means humans can solve it. Communities around the world have cleaned up toxic sites, cleared polluted rivers, and improved the air quality in their cities. Every meaningful change began with someone choosing to act.
